What do you do when a homeless person asks for money from you? The article “Why I Would Never Give Money to Homeless People,” by Broke Grad, touches upon the reasoning behind not giving money. The author is a recent graduate student with little money to spare (like most of us). He strongly supports his decision of selfishness by stating the fact that you cant trust what homeless people tell you, so why shell out dollars for them, because you want to feel good about yourself? The author also states that you don’t know what they’re going to do with the money so why bother and why risk the investment. This article really stresses the reflection that no one should give money to the homeless because simply you don’t know who this person is, you will never see him again, what he will do with the money, etc. The second article “A Homeless Man Blows $100,000 of Free Money As Seen on Oprah,” by Stephen Piperno, similarly compares with the first article. A film director wanted to shoot a documentary about what would happen if a homeless person found a suitcase full with $100,000. When the homeless man found the money he started crying in joy, the first thing he did was buy an apartment, a brand new truck and brand new cars for his friends. He got married, increased his friend size exponentially and then lost it all and was once again on the streets in no time. This actual experiment supports the first article author in why not give money to the homeless. If he can take $100,000 and blow it in no time, then a couple bucks here and there must be worthless in helping one of them.

Hi Spencer. I like how you put this two sources into conversation to explore whether one should give money to homeless people. Now you just have to add your own two cents. Since I have not seen you in a while, I am not sure what is going on with your project. Hope it is coming along well. You might consult schedule to make sure you are working on schedule with rest of the class. First drafts due Thursday..
